A big performance from everyone. Sunic with that challenge at the end typified the desire.
A mention for Sanderson who answered a few detractors today.
Say we are staying up, say Blues are staying up!

Huge relief.
Pleased for Jay as he’s had a rough time recently. Also good for Rowett to get an early win under his belt to get the fans onside.
That was a massive win.

Not much difference really apart from the result. A little more composure in the defence. KRO

Phew and get in, hallelujah.
Got pulled away before the game started and missed he first 5 minutes (and my prediction in the prediction thread) but much better performance, passing, tempo, desire it was all there and especially the desire. I'm sure some of those fan comments questoning their fight and heart have filtered through to the players the last couple of weeks and no doubt it would have stung them far more than saying they are just crap, so fair play they stood up today, now they have to keep doing it.
I wasn't too pleased when seeing the line up as it all looked a bit meet the new boss just like the old boss but far play to Rowett, has recognised these aren't cloggers and he has to play mostly to their strengths whilst trying to draw a bit more out of them in terms of their physicality and desire.
We were well worthy of the win and Stansfield is probably on a drip after all that running whilst Bacuna seems to haave decided it's his personal mission to drag the rest of his team mates to victory. As others have said special mention for Sanderson and the other defenders, they weren't perfect today but the commitment can't be questioned.
KRO

Massive. GR already earned his cheque. Hope everyone can get behind now for the big push. Some players who came in for heavy criticism (including from me) can hold their heads up tonight. Still work to be done, but Plymouth and Weds now favourites to drop. KRO

I don't think I've seen a match completed with neither side having a corner kick before.

Thoroughly deserved as well. Preston hardly had a sniff and would have been a crime had we not come away with something let alone a win

At one point we were bottom 3 but our result + those around us losing/drawing moved us a little clear. A great incentive now to stay out of those relegation places - another good performance needed at Leicester next up.

First time for weeks we haven’t let the opposition bully us. Stood up for ourselves throughout the team and won a lot more first ball’s all over the pitch. Would still prefer for the CH’s to be more aggressive still but nevertheless a vast improvement and gave us a more stable platform to play off. Enabled Miyoshi (who imo was outstanding) Paik and Bacuna to do what they do best.
Now got to keep that up for 6 more games.

Good performance, not many real gilt edged chances but luckily their players decided to slip over and present that gift.
We got that rub of the green needed. Still gutted Paik couldn't finish that chance from the bizarre Bacuna free kick.
If people want to know what Rowett is here for then today was exactly what he was brought in to do. A change of shape today and no fannying around.
Obviously Leicester away will be probably a torrid afternoon but as long as we perform like that in the next 2 home games then I feel there is maybe 4 points to be had.
It'll be great if Rotherham have their last win on Friday to keep Plymouth in the mire.

Plymouth dropping like a stone and have now sacked their manager. They have got a huge part to play in who goes down as they've still got Rotherham, QPR, Stoke, and Millwall to play but also have tricky games against Leicester and Hull.

Huge relief to finally get a win and for the first time in a while have a bit of luck go our way for the goal. Lots of positives although the game was tight and won't live long in the memory. Stansfield gave his all and fought like a trojan on occasions winning us possession and throw ins we had no right to win. I think special praise needs to be given for his goal. Easy from the stands but the number of times those easy looking one on one's with the goalkeeper are missed is high. Thought Sanderson had a good game at centre back and we had a solid performance from Bielik. MOM for me was Bacuna who was impressive throughout and at the heart of our creativity. Can frustrate and excite in equal measure but applied himself tirelessly to his task yesterday. Only negative for me was Laird's performance. I am a big fan of the lad but he was not at the races yesterday and was responsible for Preston's only real chance. No poor performances other than that and we got the job done professionally. There was no lack of heart and application. Credit to Gary Rowett for picking them up after that kick in the teeth on Friday at QPR. Our fate remains in our own hands and we can go to a nervy Leicester on Saturday with that losing steak monkey off our backs. A big ask to get anything there but you never know. A long way to go yet of course but that was a big step in the right direction. KRO.

Stansfield needs to wind his neck in.
Over did the celebration digging at fans and his interview was a bit moany.
If you score 1 in 12 after scoring 8 in 23 then you need to accept criticism for not performing well enough. He’s missed plenty and I remember early in first half where he miscontrolled the ball in a good position.
If you are gonna take the fans on then you need to be better in front of goal.

Yeah saw that and thought it strange because to me most people weren't critical of him so much as sympathetic to him being asked to do a role that isn't his forte. Maybe I'm wrong and just haven't seen the alleged criticism and naturally there'll always be detractors, if Jesus Christ had a youtube channel there'd be Christians with an opinion, but it came across as a little over sensitive on Jay's part, when you do something like that it appears to observers that you're doing it to the whole crowd. Not crime of the century and he is young but maybe better just to celebrate with fans and if feeling the need pass comment in interview afterwards, oh well.

I think.as time goes by he'll look back at that celebration and think 'what a dickhead I was then.'
He's young and has got a lot to learn - he won't be the first kid to have done it and he won't be the last.

Not one single corner yesterday.
Rowett probably seen how bad we are at defending them and probably also seen how we keep getting suckered from our own corners.
Rare sight!

Disagree with that We moan when our players don’t show passion or emotion, and then moan when they do Let me tell you had he missed that one on one that would have been plenty of our “supporters” booing him

Firstly showing emotion is meant to be emotion not attached to having a pop at the critics.
Secondly he had time to think about it and even after the initial celebration he does it again before turning to walk back to half way line.
It shows a huge lack or experience because fans remember the negative stuff more and any of his critics may well be louder if he takes another 7 games to score as that may end us this season.
There has been no instance of any booing or berating him from the terraces not a single boo or slating. This is towards online folks who probably don't even go.
Now if the fans booed him I get it. But effectively he has started something he can't win, unless he plans to score every week.
The biggest grudge from the fan base with Dean stemmed from these kind of antics. Dean would play shit for 3 months score a crucial goal and dish it. Harry Maguire another one, he plays shit for ages scores a goal against some flea bitten shit league two style international opponents and thinks he can rub it in. When a players first concern is having a go at the fans then that shows the wrong mentality.
We have learned a lot about these players over the last 5 months or so and if anything this celebration confirms my belief why I would be glad to see the back of them.
The only talking players should do is with their feet, reality is most of what comes out of the mouths of these GEN Z players is utter shite, most of which is drummed into them from press handling lessons.

Nobody is immune from criticism.
Stansfield has been poor, in my opinion, over the last month or so. Of course that is partly down to being played in a position he doesn’t like and he’s also doing England U21 duty now. Nonetheless, he hasn’t played well and people have the right to express that.
He’s a kid and he will handle these things better in future with experience and maturity. I was a critic after the QPR game, but God knows where we would be without him. Probably already down.

Yeah this is what I meant when saying it appears as though you're doing it to the whole crowd the, vast majority of whom have totally backed him all season. Not gonna crucify him over it but it wasn't a good look and to me it didn't show passion (think Stuart Pearce scoring in Euro penalty shoot out after missing in Italia 90 or elsie at the end of Bolton) but immaturity and petulance. I get it, some comments may get under his skin but you have to put it in context, there'll always be a few trolls when you're talking about tens of thousand of fans and appreciate 99% or more have been nothing but supportive and appreciate he's been asked to continually play a role that isn't really his preferred position even by his own admission.

Got no problem with a bit of emotion and then showing a bit of character.
Too often players are little robots that say nothing in post match interviews and try to please everyone
A young lad who’s reacted to scoring a big moment goal. Good on him
That people take that reaction to heart is pretty ridiculous

Post by bubba on Apr 2, 2024 21:56:53 GMT
Don't think anyone's taking it to heart, quite the opposite they're cutting him a lot of slack but the only ridiculous reaction was his and if he reacts like that from what can only have been comments by a miniscule ignorant minority, it just shows he's still go a bit of growing up to do. I mean he's gesturing to the fans as though he'd been getting it from all sides and that's just so far from the truth. Better to let his football do the talking but if he must address the few numbskulls then address them specifically in a post match interview, what he did isn't showing passion or character, just petulance and poor judgement.
PS
I don't even think Ollie M.I.A Burke would be justified, even he hasn't been criticised that much but he'd have a far better justfication than Stansfield if he popped up with a winner, of course pigs will fly first but the point stands.

Maybe
I just look at it as a 20 year old kid who’s scored a bloody important goal in a mega pressured scenario - that run from the halfway line felt like it took forever
And yeah he is probably over emotional in his post match - but have got no problems with a player speaking from the heart, especially when a microphone is poked under their nose at the final whistle
He could have easily trotted out some standard lines and played into a straight bat. For me I’d rather he spoke with a bit of emotion than monotone safe answer
