I was watching our local BBC News programme this evening, and they did a piece on a statue of Nancy Astor which was unveiled on Plymouth Hoe today, in recognition of her being the first ever female MP in the UK.
While most of the commentary was positive towards her, praising her as a role model for British women, there was a hint that she had her “foibles”, shall we say.
So I did a bit of research and discovered that, like so many members of the Conservative Party (not to mention the Daily Mail) at the time she was a Nazi sympathiser and an anti-Semite. So not so much of a role model after all.
How ironic it is that the Tories now make a big thing about the Labour Party’s dodgy record on anti-semitism in order to cover up their own Islamaphobia.
Anyway, it’s a jolly good thing that women and girls now have excellent political role models like Jess Phillips to look up to.

The Conservatives had someone in their party in the 30's who didn't much care for the Jews, and wasn't too alarmed by the National Socialists. Good to know.
Thank goodness we have future prime minister Jess Phillips to sing the praises of a European empire, ruled by an un-elected elite, and dominated by Germany.
Actually, might be an interesting one. Yardley is strong Labour & strong Brexit.

Thank you, Sir. How do you think it will go ? On the whole I mean, not just Yardley.

Jess ain’t what she makes out. Middle class girl pretending to be a salt of the earth Brummie.
Once Brexit is done I will probably go back to voting Green, where an independent UK can lead the world on environmental standards.

Laugh all you like but I know my environmental credentials are up there. Biggest polluters in the world are the emerging economies of China and India but the left argue that they need to do this to develop. Weirdly both the Tories and Greens both want the UK to be carbon neutral they just have different timescales.

But as far as I know, humans haven't been carbon neutral since they learned how to make a fire. I'm far from convinced the bubbles in my beer are fuc4ing up the planet. Actually, is it still CO2, I keep hearing about thousands of tons of carbon ? Put it this way, what we do is a drop in the ocean, compared to China, as you say. My logic is this - if humans using energy, mainly derived from coal / oil / gas, was going to fuc4 us up. Big time. If the politicos really believed that, then giving billions of pounds away each year for international development, is surely the most cun7ish thing you could think of doing ?

I’m laughing at the likes of Johnson, Raab and Rees-Mogg leading the way in saving the planet. As soon as we’re out of the EU they’ll be dismantling the environmental legislation to allow businessmen the “freedom” to make more profit. Same goes for employment legislation.
