What do people think, for this? Are we optimistic or pessimistic about our chances? We seem to have a few pros and cons
Pros:
Most of these aren't tainted by the failures of the past
They seem happier than they normally do at a tournament
Kane, Sterling and Alli could cause most teams problems (Rashford and Vardy are good back up)
Cons Lack of experience in the squad Lack of experience with the manager I still dont rate Southgate (although if he gets us to the QF i may change my opinion on him) Our defence is fairly poor Our midfield is fairly poor
All things considered I am going for a 1-1 draw later. Kane to score for us.

I forgot to add the formation to the cons as well.
I would like to see us go: Pickford Walker Cahill Maguire Rose Henderson Dier Sterling Alli Lingard (Rashford against Panama) Kane
We will stick with the weird 352 we play, the team will be:
Pickford Walker Stones Maguire Trippier Henderson Lingard Young Alli Sterling Kane
it did well against nobodies in qualifying, anyone decent will exploit that formation IMO.

With most of the first round matches having been played, some of the fancied teams appear to be below par...is it time for an unfancied team to burst through...
Tunisia maybe....
I'm obviously joking.
The England team do seem well prepared, which couldn't have been said about some England teams.
So maybe this team although possibly not the most talented of teams have a togetherness to make a mark.
I expect a 2-0 win tonight.

An unspectacular 2-0. We're better than a lot of fans realise due to how well prepared the team are, rather than having standout players. My worry is Alli, he's so easily wound up and prone to diving. If he loses his head it could cost us.

Has been mediocre to average all season and seems incapable of beating a player. Rashford for me up front with Kane and Sterling. Let Rashford play with freedom and I’ think he’s unstoppable.

I get where you are coming from, but you say you wont pick Alli as he has had a poor season. Then you go on to pick Rashford, who has hardly played all season. There's some twisted logic in there!
If I was going to drop someone for Rashford, it would be Lingard. Personally, I would have Rashford on the bench.

I would guess Ali will play, last season he never got going until the Spurs were out of Europe, then his form picked up, he's still young, younger than most think and his form will fluctuate...he can be a match winner.
If Rashford plays it would be as a 10 to Kane, and Sterling and Lingard fight it out for the other forward spot

Seeing Rashford against Costa Rica, who I accept aren’t the Worlds best but neither are Tunisia or Panama, backed up that he is more of a threat than Alli. Alli unfortunately seems to have lost focus, making videos and dancing with Erik Dier. Rashford on the other hand looks hungry and eager to prove. MM, I’ve just had deja vu from 4 years ago.

Lingard was wasteful with too many chances and what the everliving fcuk was Walker playing at? Why was he facing away from the play in the build up to the pen?

Have to say I am a fan of VAR if done properly.
The annoyance for me is that it's been proven time and time again a referee will never have a replay or multiple angles and the people with all the views and perhaps 10-20 seconds to look again will always form a better decision.
FIFA are obsessed with making it the referees final say.
Until they give the veto for a video judge there will be inconsistencies in VAR which is not what is was started for.
Surely they could have 10 VAR people each with a different viewing angle they then all give the VAR chief a vote on a decision and when it's a vast majority the VAR chief can then inform the referee and over rule his decision.
The Kane penalty was a body slam, yes Walker did catch his guy in the face but how is this one more a penalty than ours??? especially as Walker wasn't even looking at the player!!
Onto the game you have to say the scuffed finishes of some of our players were really poor almost championship standard. Kane is the only player of quality who knows how to hit a ball how he wants to hit it and boy that header was late but showed true class and delivered when we most needed it. I did fear a draw tonight knowing that a further stumble whilst under pressure would have left us going into the last game trying to get a result against Belgium whilst Tunisia would be facing Panama.
We can't have that many chances and let teams off the hook.
The training on defending needs to be stepped up hugely and players need to focus on how to deal with players in the area, the volume of penalties is what we all knew would happen. Penalties are common place and during the early days of VAR the whole of the game of defending across football needs a full review from all teams and players because over the years defenders have got away with murder and this could see a lot of average defenders who can tackle suddenly be worth a lot more. I guess keepers with high save rates will also become valuable too.
Glad we got the win, Panama's oldies will struggle with our pace and I would be shocked if we can't get at worst a draw. Hopefully if Belgium beat Tunisia it makes our less game more of a formality.

Would I be right in saying that VAR can only be used to check or reject a decision by the referee or if the referee asks for it.
So blame the ref for the none penalties, if thats what they are, not VAR or the official running it.
The referee needed to make a decision, which he plainly didn't do.

Rules state that VAR officials review everything constantly and intervenes only for a clear and obvious error.
Clearly a rugby tackle missed is a clear and obvious decision!!!

Why does Ashley Young take the direct free kicks? Is he the best we can do?

I feel much happier saying it after a win: The officials, both on the pitch and VAR, were appalling.
I'm still convinced that FIFA and UEFA dont want VAR, so they are using it poorly on purpose to try and steer opinion against it.

this
fecking dreadful, by the hour mark the Tunisians had realised the ref was weak as piss and basically did whatever they wanted, every single freekick we had they had someone standing in front of the freekick taker and only withdrew 6/7 yards when they were good and ready, the whole penalty things were a joke. The one against us was incredibly harsh but I can accept it, but not when you see what's happened to Kane. England really should have lodged a formal complaint, doing so after winning would have been viewed (at least by the world wide audience) as being genuine and not sour grapes and I do fear even if sub-consciously refs may think well they don't don't complain so don't worry too much about getting anything wrong, but seriously that fecking ref, don't know his nationality but if he's one of the best his country has to offer they must have some interesting matches.
